Roundhill Junior School, Beeston - Origins 1950
|
An aerial view of the first stages of Roundhill Junior School, under construction in 1950. In the top right-hand corner of the picture
can be seen Anglo-Scotian Mills on Wollaton Road. Bottom right is Foster Avenue with Barlows hosiery factory where the Civic Centre now stands
and the library opposite the then Town Hall. The vacant land, opposite Barlows, is where the Catholic church now stands. The wooden buildings of
Roundhill Infants'
School can be seen beyond the Town Hall, as well as the site of a building, built for wartime emergency use, which was later incorporated into the
school complex. Markhams Field, now part of the school field and the site of the Pearson Centre, can be seen between the back of the Wollaton Road
properties and where the new school building is under construction. The school opened in 1950 as a Junior Girls' School but was soon extended to
include an assembly hall and to become a Mixed Junior School.
