The Family of John Clifford, Baptist Minister and Social Reformer (1836-1923)

Although born in Sawley in Derbyshire, John Clifford moved with his family to Beeston at a young age. It was his early-life experiences there, at school and in the lace factories, that were to have a lasting impression on him and drove his social conscience. With the assistance the Baptist community, he was able to obtain a higher education, become a Baptist Minister and, eventually, a national - and international - figure in the fight for social reform, particularly for the cause of non-denominational education.
