On the staff of Sheffield Smelting Company and later was manager of its Birmingham Branch.
Described as "bright and intelligent but of a poor stock physically" ²⁴⁷

  Noted events in his life were:

• Occupation: commercial clerk for a steel file & cutlery works, by April 1871, at the time of the census. ²⁶⁰ He was then living with his wife and two children at 40 Shortridge Street, Attercliffe cum Darnell, Sheffield

• Occupation: clerk to a gold and silver refinery, at the time of the census in April 1881. ²⁵⁶ He was then living with his wife, five children and a servant at 8 Cyprus Terrace, Burgoyne Road, Nether Hallam, Yorkshire

Joseph married Helen Ashmore Styring, daughter of Henry Styring and Mary Crabtree, Q2 1868 in Sheffield Registration District.²⁵⁵ (Helen Ashmore Styring was born circa 1845 in Sheffield ^256,257,258.)
