Journalist; on the staff of the Leeds Mercury (then owned by his father), c. 1875-97. Severed his connection with the paper owing to disagreement on the question of Home Rule for Ireland. Went to London, 1897; became a Unionist, and leader-writer for the Standard. Also wrote for the Spectator and Economist. Sometime Editor of the Annual Register. Secretary of the National Society for Church Education of the Poor, 1905-16. Worked enthusiastically for the cause of Church Education; editor of the School Guardian. In the Political Intelligence Department of the Foreign Office, 1916-20. Returned to Leeds, owing to failing health, 1921. Twice married and had issue. For an appreciation of his life and work see Memoir by his son, E. R. Baines (The Industrial North; reprint of The Times articles). Died Nov. 29, 1927, at Headingley, Leeds. • Education: Christ's College, Cambridge, 1870-1875. 2 Adm. pens. at CHRIST'S, May 9, 1870. 4th s. of Frederick, merchant. B. Oct. 5, 1852, at Burley, Leeds. School, Rugby. Migrated to John's, Aug. 30, 1870; matric. Michs. 1870; B.A. 1875.

• Occupation: Secretary of the National Society for the Further Education of the Poor, at the time of the census in April 1911. 6 He and his wife were then living with his wife's uncle, Edward Stewart Talbot (the Bishop of Southwark) at Bishops House, South Place, Kennington SE

• Residence: The Old Farm, Shireoak Road, Headingley, Leeds, at the end of his life, up to his death in November 1927. 5

• Probate: by Rev Frederick John Talbot Baines (Clerk) and Susan Meriel Talbot Baines (spinster), 10 Feb 1928, London Probate Registry. 5 His estate was valued at £2,456 1s 7d.


Talbot married Caroline Agnes Talbot, daughter of John Gilbert Talbot and Meriel Sarah Lyttelton, on 13 Oct 1891 in Sevenoaks Registration District, Kent.1 (Caroline Agnes Talbot was born in Jan 1864 in Westminster 7 and died on 26 Mar 1930.)
