Nottinghamshire Parish Registers, Marriages VI, Phillimore’s Register Series, Volume XLIV (Notts. Vol. VI)

Marriage Register - St John the Baptist Parish Church - Volume 1 - 1558 to 1643

The first volume of Beeston Registers consists of 64 leaves of parchment, measuring 10½ inches by 5½, stitched together without any cover or
binding. It contains entries of all classes from 1558 to 1653, but is very defective for the last ten years of that period; two leaves, containing the
entries for 1611 and 1637, appear to have been lost.
The spelling of the surnames is in all cases the same as in the original registers, but the Christian names have in most cases been translated or
modernised.
It should be borne in mind that previous to 1752 the years were calculated as beginning on the 25th of March, so that a marriage entered as having
taken place on, say, the 20th February 1624, really occurred on that day in 1625 according to the modern calandar. This is sometimes expressed as 1624/5.
The marriages in the first two volumes were transcribed by Mr T.M. Blagg, and those from 1678 to 1812 by Major George Fellows, of Beeston Fields.
The living was vacant at the time this transcript was made, and thanks are due to Mr W. Millington, the then churchwarden, for placing the Registers at
the transcribers’ service.

and none of them Marriages. The second Volume begins in 1653, on 18 February of which year Thomas Beighton, of Beeston, clerk, was elected "Parish
Register", and his appointment confirmed by Thomas Charlton, of Chilwell, Justice of the Peace. During the Commonwealth the Marriages were performed as civil contracts,
the officiating magistrate in most cases being Thomas Charlton, aforesaid. |
