Sir James Marchant, in his biography of John Clifford (page 18, when describing John's family background, "His mother, Mary Stenson, had three brothers, Silas, John and Elam. These three more than any others exerted a fruitful influance upon him." John and Elam are well recorded in the records but, despite careful checks of census and other records, no trace of a brother Silas has been found. It is possible that the author mistook Silas, son of Elam, as a brother of Elam and John. 183
Noted events in his life were:
• Education: the Baptist College, Leicester, around the time of the census in March 1851. 271 He was then living in the household of William Glover, a butcher, as a visitor in High Street, Braunston, Northants
• Occupation: Baptist Minister, at the time of the census in April 1861. 272 He was then living with his wife, three children and a domestic servant at Nene Cottage, Mill Lane, Kislingbury, Northants.
Silas married Maria Hull, daughter of Samuel Hull and Living, Q1 1852 in Hinckley Registration District.267 (Maria Hull was born circa 1830 in Hinckley, Leics 273,274 and died Q3 1870 in Northampton Registration District 275.)
Silas next married Sarah Lenton Q2 1871 in Northampton Registration District.268 (Sarah Lenton was born circa 1837 in Alconbury, Hunts.)
