• Occupation: clerk in the gas office, at the time of the census in April 1871. 56 He was then living with his widowed father and Frederick, his brother, at High Road, Beeston
• Occupation: office clerk, at the time of the 1881 census. 57 He was then living with his wife, five children, a monthly nurse for their newest arrival - only one month old - and a domestic servant.
• Occupation: commercial clerk, at the time of the census in April 1891. 58 By then he had moved with his family to what is now 49 Imperial Road, part of Imperial Park
Samuel married Annie Thornhill, daughter of William Riley Thornhill and Eliza Wibberley, on 12 May 1874 in Beeston Parish Church. (Annie Thornhill was born on 2 Feb 1856, baptised on 2 Mar 1856 in Beeston Parish Church, died in 1927 and was buried in Beeston Cemetery 55.)
