Charles Tompson

  Noted events in his life were:

• Occupation: draper, at the time of the census in March 1851. ²⁸⁸ He and a brother and sister were apparently assisting their father in the business on Long Row where they were still living at home.

• Occupation: general draper employing three men, by the time of the census in April 1861. ³⁰² It appears that by this date he had taken over responsibility for the Long Row business following the death of his father. His mother and sister Elizabeth as well as a niece (Jane M Robinson), an apprentice and a servant were also in the household.

• Occupation: draper, at the time of the census in April 1871. ³⁰³ He had by then, apparently assumed full responsibility for the Long Row business as he lived there, unmarried, with an assistant, an apprentice and a domestic servant.
